Join our first ever expedition in search of the world’s largest lizard- the Komodo dragon. On this optional addition to the Sumatra trip, our group will jump on a homey liveaboard boat bound for Rinca, experiencing truly world-class scuba diving along the way. On Rinca and Komodo, we’ll search for treasures such as the blue phase Trimeresurus insularis (a vibrantly blue viper found nowhere else on Earth), timor pythons, komodo dragons, and russel’s vipers. This unique adventure blends the thrill of herping, the wonder of scuba diving, and the joy of exploring one of the world’s most pristine natural paradises. The reflected price includes ALL of the Sumatra expedition cost, as well as this experience. We are offering Komodo as an optional addition to your experience with us in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Over several days, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of both Komodo and Rinca, home to the iconic Komodo dragon and a treasure trove of biodiversity. We’ll search for the island’s most fascinating reptiles and amphibians, from the elusive Timor python to vibrant blue pit vipers, while learning of the modern perils they face due to poaching and climate change.

When the sun heats the land, we’ll dive beneath the surface of the turquoise waters to explore some of the richest coral reefs on Earth. The word “pristine” does not even begin to describe what lies under the surface in Komodo’s protected marine areas. Discover a vibrant underwater world teeming with marine life, from manta rays and reef sharks to kaleidoscopic schools of tropical fish. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or trying scuba for the first time (however, you must be certified), this will be a breathtaking experience you’ll never forget. Many experienced divers describe Komodo as the best diving of their lives. On land, top targets include: Komodo dragon, Eastern russel’s viper, Lesser Sunda pit viper (of which there are 3 main color variations: blue, yellow, and green), timor python, blue-lipped sea krait and the Javan spitting cobra.

Each evening, as the sky ignites with hues of orange and pink, we’ll relax and recount the day’s adventures- preparing to set off on foot in search of endemic reptilian targets. From hiking stunning ecosystems with panoramic views to marveling at bioluminescent waters under a starlit sky, this addition to the primary Sumatra expedition promises a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.

With expert guides passionate about herpetology and marine conservation, this journey is designed to connect you deeply with Southeast Asia’s awe-inspiring wildlife and landscapes. We absolutely cannot wait to share this experience with a small and curious group.
